Hi Writing

Long Story Short Newsletter
Have a Great Summer & Independence Day!
June 2012, Issue 107
Welcome! We’ve been chosen for Writers Digest’s 101 Best Sites for Writers for the 9th year in a row – thanks so much for voting for us!

LINDA BARNETT-JOHNSON – Hello reading and writing friends. Take some time during the month of June to look around you and write! The beauty of early summer should inspire you to put fingers to keyboard or pen to paper and make a permanent memory of our lovely days.

DENISE CASSINO – Whoopee! Summer’s here! I always feel grateful when the lime green aspen leaves appear and fill out my world. Flowers abound and welcome rain showers us with much needed drinks of water. My favorite season, I must say and I’m inspired every year. Have a wonderful summer and for all you fathers, have a great Father’s Day with your families.

AMY PACINI – I recently came back from a wonderfully relaxing vacation to West Virginia and Western New York. It was great to get away and spend some quality time with family and friends across the miles. The weather was absolutely beautiful with tepid temperatures in the mid-80s serenely surrounded by radiant rays of warm sunshine, azure skies, blooming spring flowers, flourishing foliage and trees, rolling green hills and dense woodlands. June is a busy month as the school year comes to an educational close. Students will graduate from high school and college where they will receive their hard earned diplomas and academic degrees. Children excitedly head off for summer camps, family vacations, and fun-filled outdoor adventures. As we celebrate Father’s Day, may we pleasantly recall all of the treasured memories and touching moments we have personally shared with our fathers. Daughters enjoy sitting down at the family dinner table exchanging jocular banter, discussing current events, and debating hot topics. Fathers teach daughters self confidence and courage, how to stand up for themselves, ride a bicycle, pitch a tent and change a tire. They objectively offer suggestions on flowers and gifts for their mothers, watch funny films and television shows, happily walk them down the aisle and dance together at their wedding. Fathers lend a helping hand to their sons with building airplanes and go karts, science projects and mathematical equations. They competitively play chess and poker, coach and positively motivate them on the sports field, teach them to drive a car, inspire and guide them with life lessons and advice on education, careers, and finance, dating, marriage and fatherhood. Fathers share smiles and laughter, tears and disappointments, triumphant high fives and proud pats on the back, comfortingly give big bear hugs and strong sobbing shoulders. They proudly share in our happiness and success, encourage and empathize with our sorrows and struggles, protect and care for us through trials and turmoil. They are instinctive advisors who generously offer golden nuggets of wisdom and counsel, abundant knowledge and experience. Fathers are remarkable men of unwavering strength, integrity and character. Wishing all fathers a Happy Father’s Day blessed with joyful hearts and loving families.

Ask Grizzly Gus

Dear Grizzly Gus:
I'm hoping you can settle an argument. While I'll admit I've gotten most of my ideas for my stories from my companion, I'm the one who has had to do all the writing, typing, proofreading, and mailing to publishers. Now when I'm starting to get published, my poodle Snookums is demanding I list her as co-author on these works. We got into a heated argument and now she's not talking. I want to be fair, but don't you think she's crazy believing she's entitled to half the rights to these stories?
Signed: Deborah 'being dogged,' in Denver, CO.

Dear Deborah:
Even if Snookums isn't entitled to half the rights to these stories, you need to recognize her as a contributor and I do believe she's entitled to some compensation - you might 'throw-her-a- few-bones,' as the saying goes. I seriously doubt she'd take you to court though she might chew up a pair of your shoes.
As to you poodle's noodle - the latest school of thought is that dogs do share the same personality traits as their owners. My pooch for example is an underachiever, only wanting to be fed and have their belly rubbed, just like me. Based on your letter I'd say you should get your crazy canine to a mental health center as soon as possible and be sure and sit in on all the sessions yourself.
Signed: Grizzly 'dog-gone' Gus.
